Course Description
Patients with bipolar disorder and their health care providers face many challenges.  First and foremost is finding a treatment that works.  Not all patients respond the same way to different atypical antipsychotics.  Many patients will try several medications and combinations of medications before they find a treatment that works.  Then the challenge becomes staying on track or medication adherence.  Once the patient starts feeling better or normal, many feel that they can stop taking their medication, this can quickly lead to relapses.  A combination of education, safe prescribing and appropriate monitoring will help us eventually eliminate the consequences of poorly managed bipolar disorder.  As the bridge between patients and physicians, pharmacist are in the position to play an integral part of multi-pronged solution to this challenge, and have the potential to ensure that bipolar disorder is not a chronic drain on patient health.
